RESILIENCE( ADAPTING WELL IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITY)

In New Zealand, we are privileged to have many
native trees.

The tree I love the most is the Pohutukawa. This tree grows along the coastline, many attached to cliff sides and rocks. It is very resilient and its canopy shelters root systems on the bare rock.

Some of these trees are over a hundred years old. Others grow in parks and gardens and are one of our most loved and respected natives.

The Pohutukawa has deep spiritual meaning for Maori connecting the beginning and ending of human life.The Pohutukawa also has a special meaning for most of us, it’s beautiful red flowers showing before Christmas which brings the promise of a long, hot summer.

Filled with nostalgia, I remember as a young child noticing the red Pohutukawa flowers sprinkled along the ground like a red carpet.
